As new studies underscore the problems of wall overpenetration and poor terminal ballistics associated with handgun-caliber firearms, many police departments and private citizens are transitioning to 5.56mm carbines as a safer and more effective option for tactical response and home defense.
The S2 Defensive Carbine program is a comprehensive one-day course designed to familiarize police and private citizens in the use of the carbine as a defensive weapon. This course is the same course used to certify police officers with a patrol carbine. In this course you will learn about the flexibility, versatility, and proper applications of the defensive carbine.
Program topics include:
Firearms Safety, Weapon Familiarization, Weapon Comparisons, Optional Equipment and Sights, Loading/unloading, Malfunction Clearance, Carry Methods, Ready Conditions, Shooting and Marksmanship Fundamentals, Cleaning and Maintenance
Between 09:00 and 12:00, the morning classroom portion of this course is presented at S2's classroom facilities in Largo.
During the lunch break (12:00-13:00), students move to the range for live fire training. Live fire instruction is held on-site at the Wyoming Antelope Club. Click here for directions and a map.

Urgent message from the S2 Institute:
As many of you are aware there is a nationwide shortage of ammunition. The S2 Institute has always prided itself on providing quality affordable training for all our students. In the very near future we will be forced to add a surcharge for ammunition to all our firearms classes. As the cost of ammunition climbs and the availability falls we will be forced to make this adjustment. The amount of the surcharge will depend on the market availability of ammunition. If students wish to provide their own ammunition for re-qualification and qualification we would encourage that. If you provide your own ammunition a cost adjustment will be made to the course cost to compensate for that. In addition we will not be able to accept students at re-qualification who have not pre-registered.
We hope the issues causing this will be resolved in the near future.
For any questions please call the school at 727-461-0066.
Students that do not own a carbine may rent one for the purposes of this course. Carbine rental fee is $25.00 per day.
Licensed security officers and law enforcment personnel that are completing this course for State of Florida required qualification should advise us prior to the class. Security officers and police that pass the range qualification will be given proof of completion to provide to the State of Florida or their agencies.
Class 3/NFA Weapons
Civilian students are not allowed to bring NFA-configuration (selective fire or short-barreled rifle) carbines to this course. All police officers with NFA-configuration carbines will ensure that the weapon remains in their sole possession at all times during the course.
All shooting exercises during this program will be performed in semi-automatic mode. Full-auto fire is prohibited in this course. Any student that violates this rule will be immediately dismissed from the class.
